A music scale usually refers to a progression of single notes upwards or downwards in steps. The scale comes from the Latin word "La Scala, the scale or because the stairs. A scale is a scale of notes running from the root note of the octave (eighth means eight, as in octopus, octagon, etc., eight notes) on scale.
Most beginners in music are the concept of scale put in place very early in their training. However, it can sometimestakes several years of training on understanding of how the scales work.
A scale begins with a root, called the tonic. In a C scale (the first at the beginning musicians learn) the tonic is C. The scale goes up or down until you reach the same note in the next octave. The C scale is a simple example. It starts with the tonic C. Going upward, the following notes are D, E, F, G, A, B and C below, note the progression C, B, A, D, F, E, D and C. The C-Scalehas a total of eight notes. The distance from the root to the next note with the same name is called an 'octave. A scale in eight notes is like a diatonic scale.
Most modern instruments, including piano, actually contain 12 notes in an octave. This is because semitones are included. Notes that the semitones are included a piano in a C scale are the keys blacks. A scale, the semitones is known as a chromatic scale. It would be a C chromatic scale to the topC, Sharp C, D, D #, E, F, F sharp, G, G #, A, A sharp, B and C below, the notes C, B, Plan B, A, A flat, G, G flat major, F, E, E flat, D flat and C. D
A pentatonic scale is scale of five tones. Pentatonic scales are not often used in Western music. The main exception to this rule may be in some American blues and rock. They are found in other cultures, rather than if, as in Asia. Pentatonic scales are also in the Celtic and African music. Lesshexatonic are common (six levels) and heptatonic stairs (seven steps). Scale may also decrease (eight steps). These are often modern classical music and jazz.
The intervals between notes on a scale (diatonic, chromatic, etc.) to determine the type of scale. An interval is defined by the distance between two notes. Sometimes they are called phases. Instruments can be important (M), minor (m), perfect (P) and extended (A) or diminished (do dim). TheType of scale is determined by the size of the intervals. Range size can unison, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. Major and minor scales are 2nds, 3rds, 6ths and 7ths. Harmony, 4ths, 5ths and octaves are perfect.
Sometimes, steps can be described as modal. A simple definition of a modal scale is a series of notes in a scale, but the lack of a primary or fundamental. Thus, under the stairs may have many different ways. For example, in fact, every major scaleseven different modal scales.
It may take several years for the formation of a musician a good handle on scales and chords. However, the rules of the youngest and newest of musicians and the principles behind their use every day. Mastering their theory may come later. Of course, every musician knows that only practice makes perfect!
